Dear Christian Blogger: Three Social Media Tips to Move Forward

Dear Christian Blogger,
We can all agree that blogging in itself is a fun/entertaining hobby/job. I mean, what better job/hobby than typing your thoughts on knowledge for others to read and interact? Wholesome!
The only problem is having to navigate the social media aspect of it. And do not say “ I can do without social media”. An industry known to amass millions of dollars for its users and their businesses, social media is definitely a top tool for any one looking to spread God’s love and message.
However, it is not that simple. Social media can be quite confusing and overwhelming, especially for the Christian creator looking to create authentic and meaningful content.
For the Christian blogger/creator, being on social media is more than just selling products, having a good social media following, or understanding its algorithms. It is a powerful medium to promote Christ and all that He has done for us.
Consequently, while other creatives’ focus might be on reaching as many people as possible or creating viral contents, our priority is creating authentic content that speaks true to who we are as Christians.
Trust me, it is an overwhelming task. As the Bible rightly says “we are in this world but not of the world”. Therefore, finding that balance between conforming to what the world wants from content creators and glorifying God in whatever you do, can be quite the challenge.
If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
John 15:19 NKJV
Hence, most times, we get stuck and are forced to take the back reins on social media in order to stay true to our faith. While this is a good approach, it is not the best. As Christians, we are to use our talents for God’s glory and experience success wherever we find ourselves.
Therefore, it is important to God that we experience success, including on social media. If not, how else are we going to use this powerful tool to take God’s word to the nooks and crannies of the earth?
With that said, if you are one who wants to use social media to promote your Christian blog but cannot find out how to, here are three social media tips to get you unstuck and point you towards success:
- Avoid the stress and fear surrounding it: As said earlier, social media can be a daunting space for many people. When in use, it is important that you have a clear reason as to why you are using it – an instrument to get your message out. Defining your goal is the only way to ensure that you do not get frustrated at some point. Additionally, it helps in tackling the anxiety and fear associated with the space. With this, the pressure of engagements, algorithms, and followership is limited and you can focus on asking God to turn the tool into a blessing for your community.
- Know who you are talking to and what they need to hear: Bear in mind that as a Christian blogger, you are not creating content for everyone. Even when the ultimate goal is to reach as many people as possible, Christian content creators/ bloggers cater to the needs of their community. So, it is necessary that when batching out content for social media, you know who you are talking to and what applies to them. This way, you keep it simple and avoid running around in circles. Thus, fostering your growth or success.
- Avoid perfectionism: Generally, perfectionism stalls progress. Now, I am not saying that picking a few unique fonts and colors and sticking with them or keeping things orderly on the feed is a bad idea. All I am saying is that in all of that, let your humanity shine through it. Things do not have a certain format or posted within a certain time frame. Switch things up sometimes. Do not be too rigid. Otherwise, exhaustion sets in and ultimately, impede your success.
Social media is a gift from God. It might have its ups and downs but it is still a blessing, nonetheless. Let’s embrace it and ask God to help us turn this tool to an invaluable resource for propagating His gospel. And while praying, we at the other end, strive to see this blessing blossom in our hands.
Your friend,
Assumpta
