Tips on Avoiding Burnout

There have been a lot of times that I have experienced burnout. Most of those time, it’s due to pressure from the work I was doing, not giving myself rest or breaks between tasks, being overwhelmed with lots of things to do, and so on.

If you have ever experienced burnout, you will know that it drains one’s energy and make one not motivated to work.

According to Collins Dictionary, Burnout is, “a total loss of energy and interest and an inability to function effectively, experienced as a result of excessive demands on one’s resources or chronic overwork.”

Burnout can be as a result of stress, over-working ourselves and not taking breaks when we need to. We shouldn’t be experiencing this.

Burnout can affect someone negatively and make that person not motivated to work or do the things they ought to.

I found out that if I take breaks within tasks, I get less stressed. Also, I discovered that if I don’t overwhelm myself with the excess workload, I get less stressed. And so, the more I get less stressed; the less the possibility of me experiencing burnout.

Burnout makes one weak, tired, and uninterested in work, this is because, with burnout, one can experience feelings that might not motivate the person to work. In addition, burnout can also make someone snap easily or easily irritated.

So how do we ensure we don’t overwork ourselves or how do we avoid burnout? Here are some tips:

  1. Take breaks: breaks are important because we need time to rest or relax from work. And so, sometimes we need to schedule breaks between tasks in order for us not to stress out ourselves. Depending on the volume and kind of work you are doing, you can know how much breaks you need between the work and also for how long to do you need to take the break.
  2. Stop procrastinating: I discovered that when I procrastinate on a task or work, I get stressed when it’s time to deliver the work or task. This is because of the fear of not meeting the deadline, which can then result in pressure, and the pressure can result in burnout.
  3. Don’t overwork yourself: be realistic about how much work you can do within a period of time. Don’t overload your schedules or your to-do lists. This is because when you are overwhelmed with so much to do within a little period of time, there is the possibility of getting stressed out in that kind of situation. Take it easy on yourself.
  4. Get the right amount of sleep you need to sleep.
  5. Eat when you need to eat, don’t skip meals.
  6. Exercising is also important: schedule time that you will be exercising.
