Biblical Passages Affirming God’s Interest in Mental Wholeness

Recently, a Euphoria star passed away and it just brought a lot of sad feelings. This is because I had always liked his character in the series, Euphoria and I thought he was a phenomenal actor. However, what hit me the hardest, was the fact that he died due to a drug overdose. I could not imagine what he might have been going through that would pressure him to the point he thought drugs were the only way. And as such, cut his life short in the process. But I guess the reality of this tragic incident is that people go through a lot mentally and otherwise. Therefore, more than ever, it is important we take mental health awareness and talk more seriously.

As some of us might know, October is Mental Health Awareness Month. And given that the tragic event mentioned above is prevalent in today’s society, it is in our best interest to create the necessary mental health awareness to prevent the worst possible outcomes and take steps to protect our mental wellbeing.

From Scriptures, you would notice that The Holy Book offers great insight on how to attain mental wholeness. Note that God is as concerned for our health (mental health included), as He is towards other aspects of our lives. Hence, He has embedded “notes” to assure us of His care and support even when we go through our mental battles.

To prove this, here are some of my favorite verses affirming God’s interests in our mental wholeness:

  1. Psalms 34:4

I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears. They looked to Him and were radiant, And their faces were not ashamed.

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭34‬:‭4‬-‭5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

  1. 2 Corinthians 10:5

casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

‭‭II Corinthians‬ ‭10‬:‭5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

  1. Romans 8:32-33

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.

‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭32‬-‭33‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

  1. Matthew 11:28-30

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭11‬:‭28‬-‭30‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

  1. 1 Peter 5:7

casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

‭‭I Peter‬ ‭5‬:‭7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

  1. Philippians 4:5-7

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭6‬-‭7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

  1. 2 Timothy 1:7

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

  1. Psalms 40:1-3

I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry. He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth— Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the Lord.
