Biblical Ways You Can Honor Your Mom Today

Often, I wonder why God thought it important to send His son, Jesus Christ, through a family. But now, I think I get it. The part families play in the building up of any society cannot be overplayed. Show me a loving and good-natured individual in any society, and I will show you someone coming from a godly and stable home. Which is to say that parents, especially mothers, play a huge role in the overall wellbeing of their children. They nurture, love, care for, and give selflessly to the family. I do not know about Marvel and DC, but mothers and mother figures alike are real superheroes. I, for one, cannot imagine how I would have turned out without my mom. She is indeed a true gem.
Apart from May being Mental Health Awareness Month, it also doubles as Mother’s Month. This means that the month, May, is set aside to honor and celebrate mothers. If you celebrate with your mom regularly, just know that in May, you double your effort (just kidding).
But on a more serious note, I think there is no better time to celebrate and honor your mom like now, as God commands it.
Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise:”
Ephesians 6:2 NKJV
With this commandment in mind, here are biblical ways you can honor or start honoring your mom today:
1. Love and care for her: It is not only on Mother’s Day that you write lengthy letters or show a bit of love and affection to your mother. It is a lifestyle. And this goes for those offended by their moms too. As far as God commands it, we are to obey it. Because by caring for and loving your parents/mom, you are also showing your love and reverence for God. Besides, what better way to honor than to love?
Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Matthew 19:19 NKJV
2. Show appreciation: Often, we tend to trivialize the role mothers or mother figures play in our lives. It should not be so. That you have a mother who cares for you, nurtures you, and still loves you as you are an adult, is such a big deal. Hence, it is important you show her that you are thankful for the sacrifices as often as possible. Indeed, that is what honor is all about.
3. Seek for her advice on issues: Asking for her opinion and advice on issues shows respect. No matter how old you get, a good way to still honor your mom would be seeking her counsel on important matters. It highlights that you value her and think that her counsel is invaluable.
4. Give to her: Most parents do not like to bother their children. So they will not ask even if in dire need. Now, they do not need to even ask before you give. Give as often as you can. Note that it must not always be material. You can give your time, ears, and energy. Essentially, endeavor to give to your mom as often as possible. It is a wise way of living.
Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.
Luke 6:38 NKJV
5. Pray for her: I know that moms are superheroes. But that does not mean that they do not need prayers. Everyone needs prayers. And nothing shows that you hold your mom in high regard as praying for her as often as possible. This is love in its greatest form.
The way you love and honor your parents/mom is the way your own children will love and respect you. Endeavor to show them love and you will get love in abundance when you have yours.
