CV writing tips for that job application

Your CV is a document that shows a prospective employee a summary of what you’ve done in the past, in your education and career.

Your CV can help a prospective employer in making a decision about whether or not to hire you. Your CV can help a prospective employer to know your skills, your experiences, and what interests you.

Sometimes, CVs are misconstrued because of the way they are written or portrayed. And so, in order to properly depict or highlight your education, skills, and potential, your CV needs to be written well.

And in writing your CV well, there are certain things to consider, some of them are:

  1. Don’t make your CV to longer than necessary: some employers want to quickly see what and what makes you different from the next person applying for the job, or what makes you suitable for the job. Some employers don’t like CVs that lingers for too long. And so, one thing you can do is to make sure you think about the economy of words when writing, and eliminate redundant words. Capture whatever you want to capture in a concise, yet meaningful and encompassing way.
  2. Use the right words and keywords: the right keywords are like hitting the right notes when playing the piano. When you use the right keywords in whatever writing you are doing, it helps to get your message easily to whoever it is you are trying to get your message across to. For instance, if you are applying for a social media role, you need to use the right keywords that will help the employer know that you know what you are talking about.
  3. Don’t be ambiguous: next, to using the right keywords is eliminating ambiguity. Whenever there is ambiguity in a piece of writing, it confuses the reader(s). And so, make sure what you are writing means what you intend for it to mean. Go over your CV, and remove anything that seems ambiguous.
  4. Be able to explain all that you wrote: also, one of the things that hamper interviews is the interviewees not being able to explain the contents of their CVs. Therefore, make sure you are able to explain whatever it is that is on your CV.
  5. Be Honest: honesty is very important, and you should be honest. If you list skills that you aren’t capable of doing, you are reducing your chances of getting selected for the job because you might be asked to demonstrate the skill one way or the other. Even though you are not asked to demonstrate the skill during the interview, at one point or the other during your work at the organization, you will have to demonstrate the skill.
  6. Aesthetics: let your CV be aesthetically pleasing. Use the right amount of spacing, use a formal and readable font, edit your CV, use section headers where appropriate, don’t forget to justify the text appropriately, and so on.

These are simple tips to have a great CV and it a great step towards getting that dream job.
