Challenge: Learn something new today!
Sorry I was MIA (missing in action) yesterday. I exhausted my data, I couldn’t get the required amount of card I needed to subscribe on Saturday and other dealers had closed. I finally bought yesterday evening but I had to scratch and load over one dozen of the card because it was a smaller denomination, not an interesting task at all. Anyways, enough of my story and straight to the matter at hand.
Learning! This is a habit that should be imbibed today and every other day. According to research, as humans, we learn consciously or unconsciously. Conscious learning is what makes us productive individuals. As a writer one of my daily goals is to learn at least two words daily, I am not sure I keep to it daily but anytime I come across a new word I try as much as possible to learn it. Recently, I noticed that I have started having a funny kind of pronunciation, plzzz that is a NO NO for me! Immediately I decided I was going to take my word task seriously!
We need to start learning consciously and not accidentally
A productive individual is a ‘learner’. A conscious learner. Next time someone says you are a learner; you can gladly concur, knowing that it is true. Alvin Toffler’s says;
“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who
cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. ”
I have compiled a list of things to learn;
-
- Learn to read – Weird right? Yes, I know people who don’t like to read or take a long period of time to read a book. Start with shorter articles and graduate to reading books. Especially books relevant to your field of interest.
- Learn to write – Everyone needs to learn to write. I believe that is part of the reason project writing is included in the university curriculum. It will help you. At least learn to articulate your thoughts on paper. You may need to sell that idea through a proposal.
- Learn a new skill – Time management, teamwork, leadership, communication skills…Skills are numerous in number. You can learn a new skill that you need in your career. One that gives you an edge in your industry. I also believe that there are certain skills that are not acknowledged but will later be a sort after skill
(my prophecy). So do not choose a skill based on its popularity but rather choose a skill based on your interest. - Learn to use new technology that can help your business/career.
- Learn a language – This is an added advantage and you can choose a widely spoken language to learn. i.e to survive in Lagos you need to know Yoruba! I am sure we can all relate to that. Take Spanish, French lessons online. You can learn any language for free here.
- Learn to drive – *Covers face* you need this. I also need to take this advice. In specific job interviews, you are asked if you can drive. It is that important.
- Learn etiquette – You will get invited to functions at the office or dinner with business partners. Learn how to eat or behave at such functions. I recently stumbled on an image that taught etiquette in the boardroom, I was quite amazed by a few new things I learned. Different occasions call for different reactions.
You can start by writing a list of what you would love to learn and take steps towards learning them. Leave a comment and let’s learn from you.
Have a productive day!
