Dealing with anxiety as a Christian

Should a Christian be dealing with anxiety? This and a couple of other questions, I find myself asking when I struggle with anxiety. In Philippians 4: 6-7, the Bible admonishes us not to be anxious. Then, why am I anxious?
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and mind in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
Taking a closer look, this verse is an advice Paul is giving to the church at Philippi. And this is because the church is struggling with anxiety. This further shed light on the fact Christians suffer from mental, emotional, and psychological problems too. The difference is the way it can be managed.
The good news is that the Bible already has us covered. More often than not, it provides us with solutions on how to overcome struggles in various spheres of life. Anxiety disorder is not an exception. Today, I will be listing solutions the Bible proffers in dealing with anxiety. However, before we head over to the Bible to uncover these gemstones, let us have a run through of what anxiety really is.
The Encyclopedia of Psychology defines anxiety as an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worries, and physical changes like increased blood pressure. Physical symptoms include sweating, trembling, dizziness, or a rapid heartbeat. A common trait associated with people suffering from anxiety disorders is the presence of recurring intrusive thoughts.
From a secular standpoint, anxiety disorder can be difficult to manage. Nevertheless, for us Christians, the Bible offers strength and hope. With that being said, here are few ways of handling anxiety as a Christian:
- Prayer
The scripture above highlights a way in which Christians are to respond to anxiety disorders and any other challenge in general. This is through prayer. As a Christian dealing with anxiety, prayer is not only the art of communicating with God, it entails acknowledging that without Him, we are helpless. It entails handing our desires, challenges, circumstances to Him and relinquishing control. When we do that, a peace that passeth all understanding will be available to us.
- Worship
Nothing can be truer than the verse which says that “In the presence of God there is fullness of joy (Psalms 16:11). And what better way to activate the presence of God? Worship is the answer. An expression of love for God, worship shifts the focus from our shortcomings to the awesomeness of God, thereby bringing peace, wholeness, and joy to our souls.
- Right believing and right confessions
Most times, anxiety stems from fear of the unknown. For the Christian, positive thinking and talking is essential because it is what differentiates us from the crowd. It is the art of knowing and constantly reminding ourselves of the fact that we have a Father who is concerned about our wellbeing and would not allow any harm to come to us, His children. Examples are thoughts of good not evil, daily affirmations over one’s life, trusting in the omnipotence of God, guarding our heart and mind against the lies of the devil. By doing all of these, we set the tone for the promises of God to manifest in our lives. Hence, giving us rest on all sides.
Feeling weary of anxiety? Doubting your faith because of how you feel? There is no need to worry. The Bible has you covered. And most importantly, we are overcomers in Christ.
