Discipline: A Much Neglected and Much Needed Spiritual Principle

As Christians, we sometimes avoid the topic of discipline because when we discuss discipline, we often think about correction of some sort of behavior or even a serious issue. After all, discipline is defined as “the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience.” Though this definition might seem intense, I think there are key points of discipline that can actually be beneficial to us as Christians.

In my perspective, discipline is a state of mind that can be converted into actions that can positively affect our christian life. Discipline is a topic that is highly exemplified in the bible. We will explore several verses and discuss how these verses can be applied to our daily
lives.

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self- discipline.

2 Timothy 1:7

God gives us the power to have self-discipline. Self-discipline is having control over oneself. For example, you may want to sleep when you know you have to study. Discipline gives you the ability to get up and get things done even when you do not feel like it.

For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Hebrews 12:11

Discipline is never easy or convenient. In fact, most times you may not find it enjoyable in the moment. However, the verse in Hebrews shows us that the fruits yielded by discipline is worth it! Though it may seem like your prayers may not be heard, or your spouse does not see why you are working so hard, you must continue to strive on because you will reap the fruits of your labor.

My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.

Proverbs 3:11-12

God is a loving father. He will correct us when we sin against him. When he rebukes us, He does so out of love because he wants us to learn and do better. Just like the way your parents will discipline you when you act wayward, God will also discipline you in order for you to shine the way you were created to shine.

Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.

Proverbs 10:17

Finally, if you do not apply discipline in your life, you will find it hard to achieve anything. Discipline will take you to places that motivation cannot. If you are someone who is not disciplined, you will find out that it may be hard to overcome tough obstacles because you have not allowed yourself to be molded for such a challenge.

I hope you read and meditate on these scriptures. We would like to hear from you1 How has discipline improved your daily life?

  • Rightly said, discipline is one of the choice pearls that hangs on the garland of the gospel. To parade without it is to be incompletely adorned.

Quite a reflective moment for me as God gently pointed in the directions of my indiscipline. And this is a reassurance of his amazing love towards me, for he disciplines the one he loves.

    Thank you for sharing.
