Easy And Practical Ways To Break From Phone Addiction

If you have been addicted to your phone at some point or are still struggling with the addiction, can we gather here? I was once a phone addict and it was not a pleasant ordeal. Statistics show that 47% of Americans are addicted to their phones. It also highlights that the average person checks their phones every twelve times, or approximately 80 times a day. In essence, the chokehold cell phones have on humans is crazy.

Does this mean that cell phones are a bad idea? Should they be banned? My answer is and will still remain no. Aside from its addictive tendencies, cell phones do a lot for us. They help us stay connected, we make money with our phones, and they keep us informed. So what about the stats? The statistics just imply that individuals have to choose discipline and moderation when it comes to their phones and any other thing, as a matter of fact.

Now every athlete who [goes into training and] competes in the games is disciplined and exercises self-control in all things. They do it to win a crown that withers, but we [do it to receive] an imperishable [crown that cannot wither]. Therefore I do not run without a definite goal; I do not flail around like one beating the air [just shadow boxing]. But [like a boxer] I strictly discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached [the gospel] to others, I myself will not somehow be disqualified [as unfit for service].

Giving your phone control over you or your time simply implies that the device is somewhat of a god. And as Christians, we are to have and serve only one God. Hence, it is pertinent we exert intense discipline and control in regards to our phone. So as not to become an addict or make it become a god, and if one already, be freed from its shackles.

Therefore, today’s post highlights easy and practical ways you can break from phone addictions:

  1. Get an alarm clock: The perfect excuse for you to reach for your phone once you get up in the morning is to stop the alarm clock. And once you do that, the obsessive cycle begins. If you truly want to break free from your cell phone dependency, get an alarm clock! This way, you get to begin your morning without your phone being the first thing you reach for once you wake up.
  1. Try a phone-free day once a week: This might be a little hard the first time you try it. But it is not impossible. Going a whole day without your cell phone helps you exercise discipline and get a lot accomplished. Thus, proving that the device is just a mere distraction and if you want to, you can manage without it interfering with your day.
  1. Turn off your phone notifications: Nothing entices you to pick up the phone like phone notifications. Notice you are always on your phone? Try turning off your phone notifications. By this, you pick up the phone only when you have something important to do with it.
  1. Delete addictive apps: Oftentimes, in order to overcome these addictions, you have to take the necessary precautions to put away things that can easily tempt you back into your mess. Is there this gaming or texting app that contributes enormously to your screen time without giving anything tangible in return? I think it is best to delete such apps, if you want to break free from the stronghold your phone has on you.
