Have you just accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior and are you contemplating the next move? No need to worry so much. With time, you will have a better understanding of how to navigate your faith journey. Starting out as a new believer in Christ can be shaky. You are new to the idea of the gospel, and as such, various concepts will prove difficult to embrace or assimilate. Nevertheless, the Christian faith is a progressive journey where with time, radical changes will happen if you are intentional about growing and experiencing God in His fullest.
Salvation is only the offset of your transformational walk with God. To ensure strong relations and growth as your walk progresses, there are certain steps you will need to take to achieve that.
For new Christians, navigating the godly path can seem overwhelming at first, but with the right guidance and a proactive approach, one can establish a strong foundation for their faith.
Here are five essential steps for new believers in embracing their new-found faith:
- Seek knowledge and understanding: Being a newbie implies that you are still new to a group or environment. This concept also applies to Christianity. A new Christian is one who has just found Christ and is yet to become familiar with the things of God. So, it is necessary for new members the faith family to seek to understand the teachings of Christianity. Reading your Bible regularly is one way to go about it, as it is the primary source of spiritual wisdom and guidance. Consequently, it will be wise to seek out study groups, join a church, or find a mentor who can provide insights into scripture and help answer questions. This way, one can gain clarity about the principles, values, and teachings and gain grounds in their faith walk.
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
Matthew 7:7-8 NKJV
- Cultivate a prayer life: The main aim of repentance is to forge a genuine relationship with Him. As we all know, relationships are useless without meaningful communication. And prayer is a fundamental means of Communication with God. Hence, for your new relationship with God to have a meaning, it is a must to cultivate a prayer life. Prayer fosters a personal connection, allows for total dependency and guidance, and seeks God’s will. Fresh converts should endeavor to develop a regular prayer routine. It not only strengthens faith but also provides a sense of peace and comfort in times of difficulty.
- Connect with a church: Christianity is not practiced in isolation. Engaging in fellowship with other believers is essential for spiritual growth and support. Apostle Paul affirms it. Therefore, new Christians should actively seek out a church community where they can connect with like-minded individuals, participate in worship, prayer, and engage in activities that promote spiritual growth. By connecting with a church, they can find encouragement, accountability, and opportunities to serve others.
And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
Hebrews 10:24-25 NKJV
- Seek discipleship: One way to grow as a new believer is through discipleship. Discipleship involves learning from experienced Christians who can provide guidance, mentorship, and support. Look for a pastor or join a discipleship program within the church to deepen your understanding of the faith. A mentor can also offer wisdom, answer questions, provide encouragement, and help navigate the challenges that may arise along the spiritual journey.
It is possible for recent converts to establish a strong foundation for their faith from the beginning. However, this path requires patience, perseverance, and a commitment to continuous growth and transformation. As a new believer, embrace these essential steps and experience an enhanced understanding of God.
