Can one not belong to a church community or go to church and still be considered a Christian? The answer is yes. Going to church does make you a child of God. What makes you a child of God lies in confessing your sins and accepting Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. Additionally, the “church” is not the building or facilities but rather its people. In essence, a Christian is the church of Christ.
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
Matthew 16:18 NKJV
However, just because belonging to a church does not necessarily play a role in one’s salvation does not mean that it is not important for your spiritual growth. And trust me, no one wants to be on a journey and not experience progress. If you want to take roots and bear fruits in your Christian walk, being part of a church community is the price to pay.
not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
Hebrews 10:25 NKJV
Finding a place where you can grow spiritually, build meaningful connections, and contribute to a shared mission is no small task.
Just as there are different courses catering to the different passions of the lot, so are there different churches/churches communities catering to the spiritual needs of God’s saints.
Therefore, It is important to carry out the necessary research and survey to determine the church community that meets your spiritual needs best. So as to avoid any discontentment or grumbling as time passes.
So if you are a new or old believer seeking to join a Church community, here are four key questions to ask to help you find your ideal fit:
- Do your spiritual beliefs and values align with that of the church in question: Regardless of the notion that all churches are one, it is still our duty to test spirits. This is because not all churches claiming to follow Jesus are actually followers of Jesus. Hence, before you decide to join or follow a particular church community, you need to question their spiritual beliefs and values and be sure they align with the word of God. This way, you limit frustration or regret in the long term.
- How welcoming and inclusive is the church: No one likes to be in a place where they do not belong or feel welcome. And as sad as this may sound, there are churches where this happens. When looking for the church to nurture your faith, it is imperative that you look for signs of genuine hospitality, diversity, and a welcoming spirit. This way, regardless of background, color, or circumstances, you will always feel comfortable and secure. Also, a church community that embraces and supports all members provides a great environment for the spiritual growth of its members.
- What opportunities exist for spiritual growth and development: Another thing to consider when searching for a church is your spiritual growth.
It is necessary that you belong to a place that is intentional about the spiritual growth of its members. So ask questions about Bible study, prayer meetings, resources, outreaches, and worship services. By this, you get to know if you will be spiritually catered for and if not, you withdraw.
- How does the community engage in outreach and service: An ideal church is one where its impact extends beyond its walls through outreach and service initiatives. Before joining a church community, ask about outreach programs, volunteer opportunities, and the church’s commitment to social justice. With this information, you get to choose or belong to a church community that actively seeks to make a positive difference. Consequently, seeking the good of all men.
Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well-being.
