How I Learned To Look On The Bright Side & Remain Positive

Man with a cell phone positively smiling

We often tend to ignore the positive side of things and think of the worst case scenario. The minute we fail to see the best in situations, we rob ourselves of a healthy state of mind. We succumb to worry, anxiety, stress, and sadness when we see the bad in every situation. Just one negative thought can lead to a downward spiral. Hence, the reason we must consciously filter every negative thought and immediately resist it. Of course, it isn’t an easy thing to do but like exercising you slowly get used to it until you consciously see only the best in situations.

Why should you always look at the positive side of situations? Because the positive side is always the brighter side of every situation. When you choose to find the positives in a seemingly negative situation; you win. It is also a healthy practice. I feel I could also use a reminder on my wall in my room that says boldly – Look On The Bright Side. We all need to see more of this and if you have to place it somewhere as a reminder, please do.

At some point, we have all read similar articles like this with all the different reasons why we should look on the bright side yadda yadda…However, it is beyond reading a bunch of articles or quotes, it requires effort on our part, not just effort but continuous efforts to ensure that we do not slip into previous ways. That’s why I have listed how I learned to look on the bright side and point you towards the right direction with a few steps that would ultimately alter your mind’s response to situations. If it is any consolation I am still learning, we all are.

1. Embrace Positive Energy

I don’t give room to negative energy. You shouldn’t either! Remove any negative energy around you. Protect your space and surround yourself with good energy. When you surround yourself with positive people, you think more positive thoughts and you tend to focus more on the positives. Be mindful of the way you spend your time and ensure that you are spending your time with the right people.

2. Be Mindful Of Your Thoughts

Your thoughts proceed your actions. Most times what we think on, we act upon. If you consciously choose your thoughts, you get to act more positive and see things on the brighter side. Sometimes, this might be difficult for some people, however, some of the things you can do is to pray, constantly analyze your thoughts, and decide on what and what not you will focus on.

3. Know The Difference Between What Is True And What Is Not

Sometimes knowing what’s true from what is not will save you a lot of stress. Be armed with facts before concluding on the situation. In our day to day activities or when situations arise, we tend to assume the worst case scenario without having our facts right. We must sieve through what is not true to be able to stay positive. A simple example would be – “You are not worth anything (lie), You are priceless (truth)”. It seems easy to detect what the truth is right? Well, it isn’t? A lot of negative thoughts come from not being able to detect what is true and what is not.

4. Approach Every Situation With The Right Attitude

Simply find the good in every situation. If you are faced with traffic on your way to work, don’t use that opportunity to start voicing out how angry you are or your regrets. Why don’t you use that opportunity to get productive? Read a good book, listen to a good podcast, plan your day, write, get your thoughts together, etc.? If we try to approach every situation with the right attitude, looking at how we can make a situation better or get good with every situation, then we get to focus more on the positives. Take an hour in traffic as a time to get yourself equipped online with new topics you need to learn, rather than see it as a waste of time; then you have approached that situation with the right attitude.

5. Be More Grateful

Appreciate each day with each moment that pass by. Be grateful for each day and every situation as you may not understand the reason for every situation you find yourself in. Approach life with gratitude and look at the brighter side.

Remember, in order to always look at the positive side of things, it is important to be intentional. Do you have other tips that we need to know? Kindly share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
