How To Replace Bad Thoughts With God’s Word

It is easy for one to get repressed with negativity, especially with the current state of things in the world. The mind becomes choked with different thoughts that can be sometimes toxic in nature. While some think this is normal and part of life, as a Christian, you know the danger that lies in allowing negative thoughts to invade your mind (Proverbs 23:7).

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

Proverbs 23:7 NKJV

Therefore, it is good to pay close attention to the kinds of thoughts we allow in our mind. With time, you become what you think, and if your thoughts are negative, expect negative results all around you!

Today’s post is focused on helping you overcome negative thoughts with scripture-focused thoughts which you can as well call “God’s thoughts”.

Is it possible to constantly fill your mind with God’s word and thoughts? Well, you are about to find out. Just stay tuned as you digest the following hacks.

  1. Identify what triggers the bad thoughts: Generally, people do not pay attention to what they see, hear and even touch. And, in this era of social media and vast news outlets, it is even worse. It is so easy to get choked with different things that can spark negative thoughts or vibes in our minds. How can we overcome this?

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

Philippians 4:8 NKJV

The simplest way to control what triggers evil thought is by focusing on what is true, noble, right, pure, and of good report. No matter how the world paints scary pictures everywhere, do not allow it to sink into your mind if you cannot measure it up with God’s word.

  1. Set your heart on God’s word: After you have identified what triggers negative thoughts, it is pertinent to set your heart on God’s word. If the Bible does not affirm it, then do not think it (2 Cor 10:5).

Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

Continue to dissipate every thought that does not conform to God’s word with God’s word!

  1. Spend time with God daily: Knowing what He says in His word concerning every negative thought or feeling is how you can freely use God’s word to dispel unpleasant thoughts. How then can you know what He says when you do not spend time to search His word? You can only give what you have. If you want to give good thoughts, have good thoughts. And good thoughts are found in God’s word (Jeremiah 29:11-13).

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 NKJV
  1. Speak words of affirmation daily: God’s words are not ordinary. Speak to them over your life. God’s word deflates tension and gives peace (John 6:63).

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

John 6:63 NKJV

Bear in mind that God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Tim 1:7). So, each time you encounter negative thoughts, do this; remember the kind of spirit you possess and send that thought back to where it belongs!
