Interview follow-up mistakes you shouldn’t make

So, you just went for an interview or some interviews, and you are thinking about doing a follow-up.

Follow-ups are important, and it is important not to make some mistakes while doing an interview follow-up.

Here are some follow-up mistakes you should avoid:

  1. Forgetting to say thank you: it is important to also thank the hiring manager for taking out time to interview you. This will also show how you appreciate being considered for the position, even if you haven’t been employed. You can send an email, a letter, or text message to appreciate the hiring manager for the interview. Also, you can use that as a chance to showcase again your interest in working for the company.
  2. Forgetting to send details you were asked to send: it is important to note all the details you have been asked to provide after the interview, in order to process your application further. And when you note them, don’t forget to send them to the company. For instance, you might be asked to give links to some of your works or portfolios, or you might be asked to send some samples of your work. Don’t forget to send them early enough; it is not enough to send them, make sure you send them early enough. In addition, you need to be sure about what channels you are asked to use in sending the details. Is it via mail? In person? Via the phone? etc.
  3. Not taking note of time frame given: most times some interviewers tell candidates when they should be expecting a feedback from them. Some might give a time frame of two weeks, while others might be less or more, depending on the company’s preference. And so, you need to know and remember when you will be contacted. Likewise, they might also make it known that those that don’t pass the interview will not be contacted. And so, based on the timeframe and instructions given by the interviewer, you can choose a suitable day to contact the company or the hiring manager about the status of your application after the time frame given by an interviewer has elapsed.
  4. Not following-up through the proper channel: you should always follow-up through the proper channel and not the wrong ones. When you don’t follow the proper channel, it might give a wrong impression about you.
  5. Not being patient: patience is important, and you need to be patient and give the interviewer time to process your application. However, when the time frame has elapsed, concerning when you will be contacted, you can contact the company or hiring manager.
  6. Not handling rejection courteously: don’t burn bridges if you were not chosen for the position. If you handle rejection courteously, you might even be considered for another position that might come up later.
