MEMORIES OF ADAKU

Nne Nne moo, udu m araputa moo udu

The song, clap, and laughter from the other children of the other mothers in the compound engulfed her ear. She wanted to play with them and also bang her feet on the floor doing ten ten but no she couldn’t. What a wish?

Oh, those days when she could run around the compound and sing those songs with her almost angelic voice. She was usually the center of attraction. They usually ran down to the village square with their feet bare on the ground, of course, it was only the richest children in their village that could afford to wear slippers and that was the king’s children alone.

The euphoria of not being caught. Sneaking to the village square and dancing till she received attention from the women around who also gave her something from their market goods.

Tawai tawai!!! She once felt on her back. It was her mother’s slim special cane on her back!!! The cane that her siblings named “Mama S”. It was their code name.

“Mama S is coming run for your life” This always had a way of propelling their skinny legs to touch the back of their legs as they dodged the wrath of Mama S! They always laughed at who couldn’t escape and barred the consequences of the others.

With her mother’s hands on her ear, she was always dragged back to their compound. Only then in the village square for a moment she was a star as she always wanted to be.

Now her dreams had been stolen from her in a blink of an eye! How cruel can nature be to a girl of 8!
