How to Take a Workstation Anywhere and Keep Your Productivity Level up

Do you find yourself drowning at your desk? Dreaming of palm trees and cold drinks? Do you envy people living in coastal regions, because they can just head to the beach straight from the office? Or perhaps you would love to head to a mountain for hiking, or a busy city where you could explore the cultural treasures? Well, it turns out it’s not just a pipe dream. With the advent of modern technology, more and more people are living the digital nomad lifestyle. That means they work remotely and travel wherever they feel like. As long as you are headed somewhere with a decent internet connection, you’re good to go. So how does it work, and, most importantly, how do you keep the balance, without turning it into a full-blown vacation with zero productivity? Here are some tips.
Planning is the mother of success
Whether it’s your job or your vacation, everything runs smoother when you plan in advance. To ensure that your workstation is a success, you need to cover all of your bases. This is definitely not the time to improvise. Make sure you book solid accommodation that will provide you with the necessary comfort. Check in advance if you will have high-speed internet available – this is obviously a deal breaker.
Review your current workload and ongoing projects – is there anything currently in the works that absolutely requires you to be physically present at the office? Create a to-do list for yourself and your team, and talk to your team members before you leave. Prepare ahead the stuff that needs to roll out the day of your trip. Bring another device you can work from if need be, like a tablet or your smartphone, in case you encounter laptop troubles. Depending on the country you are traveling to, you should check whether you need outlet converters. The better prepared you are, the less chance of nasty surprises.
Find a working environment
One of the main factors in work efficiency is having a suitable working environment. Depending on your line of work and your own personality, your idea of the ideal office might vary. Some people are perfectly content working from the couch of their rented apartment, the hotel bed, or a table in a crowded cafe. Others have problems concentrating in any other space apart from one that is allocated specifically for work purposes. Luckily, that’s not a problem anymore, as renting shared office space is becoming quite commonplace. Just make sure you find appropriate space in advance. For instance, if you are heading to Australia, booking shared office space in Melbourne would be a smart move.
Boost your productivity
One of the best parts of working remotely is that, more often than not, you can create your own schedule. When are you most productive? Does it take you a couple of hours in the morning just to start functioning properly? Then don’t waste your morning sitting aimlessly in front of the computer. Hit the beach, and work in the afternoon when your brain is fully alert. But be careful, unless you make a strict schedule for yourself, you might find that time is slipping through your hands.
Allocate a portion of your day to work, just as you normally would, and don’t allow your fun time and working hours to bleed into each other. If you have a traveling companion, check beforehand that they are completely aware that you will be working, and just how much. Having a constant distraction dragging you to the beach or sightseeing in the middle of your working hours will probably end in a disaster. To avoid communication problems and delays, don’t forget to let your clients know if you are changing your time zone, or if you expect to have limited availability.
The time has finally come when wanderers can live the life they have always wanted. Whether you want to spend the whole summer in a seaside resort town, or your dream is to never really settle down anywhere, but go where the road takes you – it can now finally be done. All you need to do is pack your bags, take your computer with you, and take the plunge.
