The thing about Procrastination

I have had several encounters with procrastination and none of those encounters ever made me want to procrastinate again.
Procrastination doesn’t do any good, it leads to different things like not completing what we ought to do on time, pressure, doing work haphazardly, overwhelming ourselves with work due to piling up work, etc.
According to Dictionary.com, Procrastination means, “the act or habit of procrastinating, or putting off or delaying, especially something requiring immediate attention”
I look at the time more when I’m close to the deadline for submitting something, and then I begin to think of what I had been doing all these while that I didn’t do what I ought to have done beforehand. This happens to me frequently and it has gotten to a stage where I can’t allow it anymore.
I can’t allow procrastination again, I can’t. The pressure, the rush, the anger, and the sloppiness of work that comes with procrastination are not pleasing.
Sometimes I even procrastinate on things that I want to do for myself, I procrastinate on taking care of my hair, or even having my ‘me-time’ at times! There are so many DIYs I have always wanted to try out but I have procrastinated on almost all of them.
Clearly, this isn’t a good habit as it can impede one’s productivity. To procrastinate is to postpone what someone would have done in the present to a later time.
Procrastination brings in a lot of disadvantages, number one is pressure. When you procrastinate on an assignment for instance, and it is almost time to submit it, the pressure becomes much when the deadline to submit is close.
Another disadvantage procrastination brings is the rush. I don’t like rushing, I like taking my time to carefully do the things I ought to do. But when I procrastinate, I rush and I don’t get to do the things that I ought to do well or in a way I would have liked to do them better; this can lead to doing a sloppy work.
Most times when I procrastinate, and I have a little period of time to complete the task that I ought to complete, I sometimes don’t usually give the task my best, because deep down I knew I could have done better if I had started the work earlier.
Some things that cause procrastination are laziness, not being interested in the thing you want to do, thinking of having too much time to complete a task or an assignment, etc.
Some ways we can avoid procrastinating are:
- Praying to God for grace to complete the task we need to complete accurately and in time. We can always pray to God to help us do that which we need to do in time.
- Avoiding Laziness: laziness can lead to procrastination. And so, one of the ways we can avoid procrastination is by not being lazy.
- Developing interest in the task: sometimes I tend to procrastinate more on tasks that do not interest me. And so, in situations like that, it is useful to develop an interest in the task. Find something that interests you in the task and remember the thing whenever you feel like you don’t like the task or the task is dull or boring.
- Thinking about how you won’t have to do a lot of things later on when you complete the task now.
