True Story: Brelyn Bowman presents certificate of her virginity to her dad on wedding day, seriously!? Yes Seriously!
Tim and Brelyn got married on the 10th of October. Their single act of celebrating their celibacy has sparked controversy in the online community.
The bride during her wedding ceremony with 3,500 people in attendance beckoned for her father to come forward and presented him with a signed certificate by a doctor that her hymen was intact. Brelyn at a young age of 13 had signed a covenant to remain chaste.

Here is what I think concerning the negativity that has been fired at this couple – I think it’s totally uncalled for. Here are my reasons why I think their decision should be celebrated:
- God’s view about marriage: I was talking with a friend and he clearly stated how sex is now the cheapest thing. There is also a school of thought that any lady/man that you meet now isn’t/can’t be a virgin. Irrespective of these speculations, that is not the way it is meant to be. I believe the word of God is very clear on fornication (sex outside marriage). We must also note that he placed these restrictions there for our own benefits.
- Discipline is a great virtue: It’s not easy to delay gratification and I think discipline is something to be celebrated and this couple showed how disciplined they can be even in the decay of values in the society. The discipline that seems to be a lacking virtue nowadays.
- A source of encouragement to other couples: I don’t think their intention was to be condescending. I believe they are examples of being in this world but not of this world. It’s an encouragement that we still have people who wait and that anyone who chooses to wait isn’t alone – secondary or primary virgin irrespective.
There are individuals who are scared to admit to their friends that they are chaste for fear of being ridiculed. So I think what they have done is something worth encouraging.
There are so many reasons why I think this couples are being bullied and suffering unnecessary attacks but I will stop at those three. You may argue as to why they chose to make it public or why the bride had to go as far as giving a certificate. I will say that it’s the motive behind the action that matters.
In this generation, I have seen where evil is celebrated and good is barely even noticed. So I think God is the only judge of the intent of the heart. I don’t know what her motive was when she handed the certificate to her dad, as she said she was honouring her dad. I believe everyone should learn what they can from this couple and move on.
However, what do we have to say about those who have lost theirs? Well, the truth is your virginity is not what saves you. Only Christ saves or can save you. There may be virgins who will go to hell and a nonvirgin who would go to heaven. This just tells us that our focus should be on Jesus.
We are to lay emphasis on purity and not virginity because people try to keep virginity at all cost (they do every other thing except penetration). If the focus is on purity then I think such a person would have the right reason to want to abstain from sex before marriage. Such a person won’t hate the idea of ‘sex’ but the idea of fornication. Sex within the confines of marriage is what is meant to be.

Let’s hear from you. What do you think?
I knew i was never alone in this wilderness- the belief that sexual purity is a possibility and should be encouraged. God told Elijah, “i have 7000 men who have not bowed the knees to baal”.
Hi Samuel, no you are not alone! God is also with you in this battle. I hope you will share your testimony with us soon! Thank you
